Team Captain Training
Step 1
Discuss basic overview of Walk Across Texas:
- Teams of eight people walk for 8 weeks.
- Specific start and finish dates.
- Site managers at larger sites manage implementation by working with Extension agent and captains.
- One person from each team agrees to be captain.
- Captains or their designate enter their team’s registration, weekly mileage and/or pounds lost, and wrap up information at http://walkacrosstexas.tamu.edu.
- Team members can e-mail, phone, or fax their mileage to team captain or designated person to enter the mileage on the website.
- Captains may choose one of the optional activities to do during the eight weeks.
- Starts with a Kick-Off Event.
- Around 4th week, may have a Don’t Give Up Now / Mid-Way Event.
- Concludes with a Recognition Event.
- Certificates of Recognition are give to participant.
Step 2
Discuss captains’ role:
- Recruit and sign up 7 team members.
- Distribute team packet to each member.
- Complete the Team Registration Form (English: PDF | MS Word | WordPerfect / Spanish: PDF | MS Word | WordPerfect) and give to Site Manager who will send this information to county Extension agent by e-mail, fax, or mail.
- Collect Individual Registration, weekly mileage and Wrap-Up Form (this one is the evaluation at the end of Walk Across Texas) from team members.
- Enter information from Individual Registration (English: PDF | MS Word | WordPerfect / Spanish: PDF | MS Word | WordPerfect), weekly mileage (English: PDF | MS Word | WordPerfect / Spanish: PDF | MS Word | WordPerfect), and Wrap-Up Form (English: PDF | MS Word | WordPerfect / Spanish: PDF | MS Word | WordPerfect) from self (captain) and seven members.
- Provide information to team members regarding Events during Walk Across Texas.
- Obtain Recognition Certificates from Site Manager and distribute them at Recognition Event.
- Consult with Site Manager or county agent regarding questions.
Step 3
Practice data entry on http://walkacrosstexas.tamu.edu.
To register a team:
- Click on Enter Team Captain Registration.
- Go to County, scroll down and select Practice Team.
- Enter a password and write it down somewhere. This word must be entered exactly the same each time. If you used capital letters, you must use them the next time, too.
- Enter your team name, and write it down somewhere. The team name must be entered exactly the same each time. For example, if you enter Road Toads as your team name, Road Toad will not work. You must type in capital letters if this is how you entered your team name that way.
- Enter data, proofread, make corrections, if needed, and submit (this will not actually be counted because it is just for practice).
- Print the next page for your “records” and click on “Register a Team Member.” Enter data, proofread, and submit information. You can enter data for the 7 individuals on your team.
- If you do not have all 7 individual registration forms from your team members and would like to register
them at a later date:
- Click on Enter Individual Registration.
- Go to County, scroll down and select Practice Team.
- Enter data, proofread, and submit.
To Add/Update Mileage or Team Pounds Lost
- Click on Add/Update Team Mileage or Team Pounds
Lost.
- Enter first names of yourself and team members the first time; once everyone is entered, they appear thereafter.
- Enter weekly totals for each member.
- Click Update information.
To Edit/Correct Something
- If you want to edit something on the Individual Team Registration site after if has been entered, click on “Correct Team Registration.”
To Enter Team Member Wrap-Up
- Click on Team Member Wrap-Up and demonstrate how to enter the data from that form.
