Beginning September 21, Texas AgriLife Extension Service is partnering with the Texas Education Agency (TEA) to host a Walk Across Texas! friendly challenge to motivate TEA and independent school district (ISD) employees to move more and have fun, too! The challenge will begin on September 21st and end November 15th. Employees will form teams of 8 to walk 8 weeks. One team member volunteers to be a team captain to make sure teams are registered and miles are logged each week. Check this site every Monday to see the top three TEA and top school district team totals. Other challenge “news” will be posted here too.
Teachers click here to enroll your class teams.
At the same time, teachers may enroll their classes as school teams to see how far they can walk during the same dates. Individual schools may choose to have competitions between classes and post class mileages each week in their schools. Students may ask their families and friends to log Bonus Miles to add to their class miles too.
Click here to find optional TEKS lesson plans written by teachers for your classes.
Teachers, have your students ask their parents and other family and friends to help increase weekly class mileage. Print our Bonus Mileage Log and give to students to take home each week. Add up these miles and post online in the Bonus Miles column. These Bonus Miles will be added into your weekly total miles.

Walk Across Texas! works best when groups decide how they want to count miles. One option is to allow every 20 minutes of walking at a moderate speed to count as 1 mile. Walking at a moderate speed is about 3 miles per hour. This is the most common speed walked for most people.
Some groups want to use our Mileage Equivalent Calculator.
Other groups decide to log miles using steps on a pedometer. 2000 steps equals one mile. Most groups choose to allow participants using pedometers to convert all of their steps each day to miles.
